Coworking Canberra

Stephen Collins this week mentioned Coworking in Canberra on Twitter - so we’ve thrown a few ideas around, talked to some people and looks like we’re going to give this a decent go.

We’ve currently got a page on the Coworking wiki Coworking Canberra that we’re working on plus a Facebook group “Coworking Canberra Australia” and also a thread on the Coworking Google Group.

Only a few days into the planning so not much yet, just looking at location - price vs accessibility (CBD, Phillip or Tuggeranong?), how it all works, if it’s feasible in Canberra, the sorts of people who might want to use such a facility (freelance web designers, writers, small businesses etc), operating costs, resources etc.

Here’s the start of a mind map I started putting together today:

Mind map of Coworking Canberra

If you want to get involved or want to express your interest in this project or the use of the space once it’s set up please let me know!

Also I heard Krissy is investigating Coworking opportunities in Fremantle, and looks like one is opening up in Melbourne. Sweet!

Stephen Collins has blogged about it also.

Hey I hope the Canberra coworking space gets up and working. It’s all a little daunting but I really think the idea is a good one - better than being stuck at home working! (By the way, it’s fremantle with one e)

I’m sick of working from home - home should be home, not an office where you sleep. And thanks for the typo pick-up; fixed. Good luck with yours too - hopefully you’ll find someone who will co-CoworkingCatalyst with you!

I like the concept. But I have other issues, besides just lifting and shifting office. However if I got somewhere 5-10 minutes away I would consider it also.

Are you looking at piggy backing off another companies space, or starting from scratch?

Thanks for the mind-map, just in time for tomorrow night’s Sydney’s coworking meetup. I’m gonna have to up the notch on the blogging.

Hmm I think it’s probably going to be best to as far as possibly keep it away from association with companies … but at the end of the day if it’s not financially feasible to have it as a standalone entity then we may need to consider sponsorship/endorsement/support etc from an existing company.

Yea, i’d like something like this, but for now am happy working from home. Gonna have to email Tim for the Sydney one for details. Will add that to my huge todo list :)
