Web designer’s block - hitting the wall

Gary’s written a post with some good advice on what to do when you’ve run out of inspiration and creativity. Well … you don’t “run out” of creativity, it’s all still up in your head you just can’t get to it.

I liken it to a rope knot. If you don’t give your mind breathing space it’s like just tugging at the two loose ends of a bundle of rope until it’s a tight, tense knot. Just forging ahead with your work non-stop is not going to help … take a step back and unwind! You need that time to reflect, to absorb new ideas and influences.

If you’re staring at a blank Photoshop canvas or HTML editor and you’re frustrated, annoyed and pounding the desk with your fist screaming “Think of something!” at yourself, you can literally visualise the knot in your head. Don’t keep pulling the knot tighter - unravel it. Rest.

And if you work somewhere where taking time out during your day is frowned upon, then you’ve got to move on. It’s no good for your health.
