Problems with my Vodafone 3G USB modem
I got my Vodafone 3G USB modem with my new phone yesterday and hooked it up with my Asus Eee PC no worries. Linux 2.6 comes with drivers so I simply plugged the modem in, created a new connection, selected 3G modem, searched for providers, selected Vodafone, then Australia - Vodafone and that was it.
I did manage to break it a few times while trying to get connection sharing happening over Ethernet to a Meraki … I don’t know what I did but the modem stopped working … it’d get stuck on dialing *99# with an error in the log after the ATDT call.
I tried recreating the connection but no luck.
I found I had to actually remove the connection, restart the computer, and then recreate the connection and now it’s working again. Still haven’t gotten connection sharing working yet … but I’m sure it’s doable, although apparently the Huawei does have some reliability issues when other connections such as wireless and Ethernet are enabled.
Also, if you go into the properties for your 3G connection you will have to reselect the modem in the Hardware tab as on the Eee it will default to your audio card. You only need to do this the first time you go into your properties.

I have had my Vodafone modem for 13 months now. I had no real problems for the first few months but since August 2008 I keep getting disconnected in the middle of a download and my bills have become horrendous. I live in Halifax St Adelaide and it often takes 6-10 times of trying to connect, seeing the error windows etc. I was in Lyon for four months last year and am very impressed with French telecommunications - free wireless Internet in the city with no limitations and it was so fast. Back in Deadelaide feels like going back in time and the Vodafone modem is nothing but frustration and disappointment especially as there is virtually no customer support. A phone call will route me through to 6-7 people before being simply cut off
