Free Australia Wireless

I am a coordinator of the Free Australia Wireless - previously known as Free Canberra Wireless and Free Sydney Wireless but brought under the one banner as we now have free WiFi projects in several other cities in Australia now including Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Perth. Additionally the Wireless World 2008 conference and exhibition organisers needed us to just have one name when we have a stall there to promote the project and the wireless mesh networking devices we use.

The role of Free Australia Wireless and particularly the five coordinators currently involved with the project is to promote and raise awareness of the project and the concept of free wireless in general, educate people about the technology, benefits and security, privacy and legal issues surrounding the sharing of Internet access. We also organise bulk orders of wireless mesh networking devices - so far this year (2008) I have spent $3,000 in Meraki Mini and Meraki Outdoor routers and accessories which I have on-sold at no profit to myself or the project. We also help in network topography planning, device installation, configuration and troubleshooting.

We’re still working on the Free Australia Wireless site - so in the meantime you can visit the Free Canberra Wireless blog which I look after or the Free Sydney Wireless blog, managed by Jean-Jacques Halans.

Or if you want to get involved in the project or find out how to connect to a free wireless network then you can contact me.
